same old complaint

I have to wonder if there is anything I can do to look a little older (in a good way). You may wonder why I complain about this. It is just really frustrating not being taken seriously. Some recent examples: 1. I was applying for a position a while ago and the person interviewing me asked me how I got to the interview. I told him I drove. He was very surprised. "You can drive?" He thought I wasn't even 16. When he found out I'm married, he was completely shocked. 2. I was at my internship, sitting in my supervisor's office, working on a project with her. One of our co-workers came in the room and asked my supervisor, "What are you doing for l-u-n-c-h?" My supervisor asked her why she was spelling it out. She said, "Because there is a little rabbit with big ears in the room" and looked right at me (there was no one else in the room). 3. Wendel and I went to drop something off at a friend's house last week and their teenage son's friend answered the door. Our friend later told us that the kid told him, "There's a guy and his daughter at the door for you." I saw this same kid tonight at their house, and he said he was sorry for the misunderstanding "but with the way you wear your hair parted like that, you look like a little kid."

So...I am asking any who read this blog if there is anything you think I can do to look a bit older? I have an appointment to get my hair cut on Tuesday. Any specific cut that you think might help? Anything at all? Anyone?

Oooh, how exciting! I'm cutting my hair soon too. I'm sorry, but I have no helpful suggestions for your dilemma. I too am always thought to be much younger. I hate going to Peter's work party and telling people we have 4 kids. They never think either of us are old enough. I can't wait to see what you decide for your haircut! I can't decide how to do mine!

I think you look older without your glasses on. And I think you should do layers kinda like the "Rachel from Friends" cut. I think that would look good on you. But whatever you decide, let us see a picture!

Thanks for making me laugh out loud on a Monday morning. :)

I don't know what direction you should go, but I can say that pig tails with ringlets is a 'do that you should steer clear of. :)

I say go short...that always helps!

I have the same problem- I'm 23 and people think I'm 12. I'm married too and have a 2 year old, and believe me, I get the stink eye in public because people think I'm a teenage mother (and everyone thinks I'm my husband's daughter too- it doesn't help he's prematurely gray). It is not as bad since I got my hair cut short, however. And when I say short, I mean short. I look older (in a good way) even to me now.

Seriously, Ash, I don't think you look that young. You look great, but not like a teenager. When I started teaching I needed to look older, you know, so people didn't think I was a student. I had to dress up all the time, more so than other teachers, and I got new makeup that was more "sophisticated." I like Bare Minerals, and I think the "warmth" bronzer helps me look a little more grown up. Long hair does make people look younger, I think, but yours is so pretty, it's a shame to cut it. I want to see pictures no matter what!

That was pretty d-a-m-n funny.

Glad you got a kick out of it, Dave. It really is humorous when I take a step back and look at the situation.

Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions. I might just have to chop my hair and get contacts.

I say go short, too. Those stories are totally crazy. How utterly strange.

Hey Ashley! (Mandy here) I don't know how short you're willing to go, but short hair does give a mature look-as has been mentioned in some of the comments. If you're not willing to go as short as a pixie cut, then I'd suggest going for a bob, but an A-line bob. Where it's really short and layered at the back (providing body) and gradually goes longer as it comes closer to your face. You'll have to post pictures of you after your haircut! Have fun!
